Viticulture from Chile to Italy

Due to the agriculture area that I am involved, more than three years ago, after a conversation with Prof. Ettore Capri, I had the opportunity to start a PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry and Ecology of Plant Protection Products and Xenobiotics, supported by the University of Milan in a joint cooperation with the Faculty of Agriculture of the University Catholic of Piacenza.

The PhD was focused on the Chilean viticulture enhancing the importance on modelling the environmental impact of pesticides and soil erosion in vineyards. As an agronomist is very important not only to know about the crop management also to know the people that works at field level. But a big percentage of the success of every project depends on the people are you working with, not only in the sense on their professional expertise also on the personal characteristics. And in that sense I’m a lucky person, in Chile I’m working with an excellent group where you can feel that the goals are close.

For me was also an opportunity to show our viticulture, with a wine production very well known and recognized at national and international level due to their quality. Farmers and wineries are very innovative and enterprising.

The experience gained was not only from the professional point of view, also gave me the opportunity to meet professionals from different part of the world, mainly in Italy, from the Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Chemistry sharing knowledge and relaxing moments. As well as visit the beautiful Italian cities with their people, traditions and typical food.

This is the start of a fruitful work on future projects and friendship.  Thanks to my Chilean and Italian colleagues.
